so many boards!

Thu May 23, 2013 7:08 pm

Me and the big goblin have recently gained control over the attic of his parents shed.We plan to make it into a games room with lots of boards.Thormarillion is going to love us. What are the best guides to make boards and terrain. We want to be able to fight battles from Hobbiton to mordor.Well enough to play most scenarios. We are going to try not spending over 600 euro(We most likely will anyway :D )

With £600, imagination, and time, absolutely anything is possible. I envy your budget 8-)

I think there are a couple of ways to go.

1. Flocked Table
This is what I use 95% of the time. A static table made of 2x4 and Plywood. Flocked green. I then use seperate pieces of terrain to go on top like River sections, Foam hills and Railroad Scenic Trees. Here's my table http://xinslair.blogspot.com/2013/04/isengard-vs-fellowship.html. One problem you get with this method is the golf course effect. Very flat, plain terrian, that you have to add pieces to, too break it up.

2. Drop cloth/game mat. You use a colored mat on top of foam hills. We use this method for Conventions. Allows us to make hills very quickly and set up. Also if you put down enough foam layers, you can push felt into riverbeds and roadbeds. Makes for nice 3d effect.

3. Terrain Boards. Lots of examples of Square terrain boards on the net. You make square boards, with different terrain pieces on them. Very Modular, quick set up. One big bonus of this method is the ability to have sunken roads and rivers as you can dig into the terrain boards to make these features. More realistic than a rubber river lying on top of the table. I did this method for Star Ship Troopers. But long 2x5 boards. http://xinslair.blogspot.com/2007/06/bugs-on-train.html. This was just long pink insulation boards painted and pushed together. The hills were carved out of the same stuff and stacked up.

4. Then there is the static custom terrain board. You have a static pre-made playing surface. It is usually the best looking out of all the others. But the downside is, you fight over the same terrain again and again.

These are just a few ideas, I'm sure there are lots of others.

Cheers, good luck, Xin

There used to be quite some useful articles for this on this site. Fortunately, there are also some other good sites for this. Here are a few useful links:
