Alternative Figures

Thu Jan 09, 2014 1:38 pm

Hi there.
I've got no rub with GW and really like a majority of the figures they produce in the range. I'm just looking for alternative suppliers (I'm UK based) of figures and suitable middle earth style scenery go give a little variety to my collection.
Thanks for any comments

Gripping Beast.
Musketeer Miniatures.
Crusader Miniatures
Wargames Factory
Wargames Foundry
Mithril Miniatures (32mm Lord of the Rings)

There are many historical miniature ranges out there that are fantastic detail and very cheap. With a little conversion and appropriate paint schemes they can be made to work for LOTR.

Heres a few of the ones I have.

Gripping Beast

Saxon Thegns (plastic)

Dark Age Warriors (plastic)

Viking Hirdmen (plastic)

Musketeer Miniatures (all metal)

Also, in terms of the Hobbit range, check out Thunderbolt Mountain, by the sculptor Tom Meier. His range of High Elves, Wood Elves and Goblins fit the LOTR/Hobbit range quite well, and are cast in metal and competitively priced against GW plastics.

I am not a real fan of the Hobbit film's Goblin town mutant goblins, and not desperately gone on the Mirkwood Guards, the Thunderbolt Mountain figures can replace those.

Warlord Games is one of the largest manufacturers of historicals. They have a good selection of barbarians, romans and the like. The armory section has decals, spare sprues and parts, and they have also terrain. Many of their procucts are from other companies.

Gamezone has some great monsters, namely the eagles and wolves. Putting them together is a pain, but once finished, they are awesome.
