Selling my collection and need advice

Sat Jan 25, 2014 1:48 am

Hi guys,
I am moving to New Zealand soon and have decided to only take the real essentials with me. Whilst going through all of my stuff I came across my (long thought lost) Lord of the Rings collection. Unfortunately, I have decided not to take this with me. The purpose of this thread is to both ask for advice as well as offer this collection to the community here.

So the advice part, I have been out of the hobby for a very long time so I feel a little out of my depth when it comes to pricing and grouping of models. I've studied the Games Workshop store and my collection values at way over £1500 but I realise that I shouldn't expect anything close to this; what do you guys think?

Here are all of the models:
Witch King on Fell Beast
Ringwraith on Fell Beast
Cave Troll with Hammer
Cave Troll with Spear
The Goblin King
Mounted Ringwraith x 2
Mounted Witch King
Grima Wormtongue
Grishnakh x 2
Orc Shaman
Mordor Orc Catapult
Mounted Sharku
Uruk-hai Captain x 2
Lurtz x 3
Orc Banner Bearer
Ring Wraith
Orc Captain
Uruk Hai x 74
Mordor Orcs x 79
Haradrim x 77
Moria Goblins x 44
Warg Riders x 6
Wargs x 6
Easterlings x 20

Mounted King Theoden
Arwen and Frodo on Asfaloth
Warriors of Minas Tirith Mounted Standard Bearer
Warriors of Minas Tirith Standard Bearer
Mounted Aragorn
Gimli x 2
Eowyn x 2
Gandalf on Shadowfax
Glorfindel on Asfaloth
Boromir x 2
Tom Bombadil
Merry, Esquire of Rohan x 2
Mounted Eomer x 2
Boromir, Captain of the White Tower
Gandalf the Grey x 2
Mounted Theodred
King of the Dead x 2
Legolas x 3
Saruman the White x 2
Dwarf Captain
Pippin, Captain of the Citadel x 2
Aragorn the Ranger
Frodo x 2
Aragon the King
Faramir x 2
Elladan & Elrohir
Mounted Aragon the King
Gamling, Bearer of the Royal Standard of Rohan
Mounted Prince Imrahil
Sam x 2
Prince Imrahil
Witch King
Faramir, Ranger of Ithilien
Gandalf The White
Elves of the Last Alliance x 45
Warriors of Minas Tirith x 72
Knights of Gondor x 5
Riders of Rohan x 21
Rohirrim x 32
Knights of Dol Amroth x 8
Warriors of the Dead x 9
Warriors of Numenor x 14
Gondor Catapult Crew x 3

+ Strategy Battle Game Rulebook, Legions of Middle Earth Book & Return of the King Sourcebook

I would prefer to sell this as one collection so that it is all gone at once but I'm happy to take offers for individual models.

What part of NZ are you moving to I live in Wellington and am keen for another player :)

You can probably get a fair bit of money if you sell some of the more rearer stuff on Trade Me (New Zealand version of Ebay)

Other than that I don't have much advice.

Hi Pokyha, thanks for the reply. I'm moving to the South Island I'm afraid but maybe moving to Wellington at some point depending on how my travels go and if I can find a job there. I'll check out trademe, thanks!

As a side note, I also just found my Balrog, Sauron and Mumakil models if anybody is interested?

Thanks guys.

Just be smart about it. There are many hobbyists that are as greedy if not more so than GW. They will tak advantage of someone 'selling off' and get models for a steal then sell what they don't want for better prices actually making money off your stuff while taking what they want from the collection (and in turn not giving a nice deal to his fellow hobbyists).
When this game came out plastics were about $1 each, metal warriors were about $3 each and metal heroes on foot were $10, on horse were $15-20.
I would sell offer plastics at $2, $4 if mounted, metal warriors at $5, Metal heroes at $10 still, and mounted heroes at $15. then take off discounts for groups, so if someone wants 50 troops and a hero instead of 110 make it 90, or something like that. This way, fans are getting a little of a deal or old day prices, and people who re-sell still have a little margin but will not be robbing you or the next guy they sell too. Keeps everyone honest.
Obviously convert from my US prices to what you are using.

Actually they might be worth more than you think. Some of those figures are getting to be OOP, as GW is just not casting them up anymore. This is being reflected in ebay prices. The secondary market prices are on the rise, since the Hobbit movies have rekindled an interest in many gamers/collectors. So sell carefully. Are they painted? If yes, how well?

Also another factor is how quickly you need to dump them? Are you moving next week, next month, 6 months? The more time you have, the more money you can get. How quickly you need to sell is YOUR business. Don't let that drive the other persons bargaining position.

So again, sell carefully. There is some demand for what you have.

Hi there

I'm selling off lots of my models and have had luck on ebay. I suggest grouping your models into factions of say 12 models + hero. If you can wait until a free listing weekend, you can set a starting value that meets your minimum asking price. The only headache you will have is setting the price as you will need to add ebay and paypal fees plus postage cost as the buyer will only be interest in the final cost to them. However, be realistic, group models (with a good picture) and you should be able to sell most.

Good luck in NZ

Hi guys,
I just wanted to thank you guys for the fantastic replies they have been hugely helpful!
Could I trouble you for another bit of advice- how would you guys group the collection into smaller parts. I think this makes more sense than selling it as a whole but I'm not sure how to break it up.
Finally do you think there'd be any interest for the collection as a whole?
Thanks again :)

Word from one who has....

Take your time. Put blobs of them up on ebay, perhaps, before you head off. When you sell things in a hurry due to life circumstances (moving needs, job loss or whatever), you tend to lose out. This way you make time work for you.

The other option is to store them somewhere (somewhere really secure - I had a whole bunch of figures stolen from the barn I stored mine) until they can be shipped to you (its not that pricey, especially if you take the slower shipping option. Just make sure to mark them for customs as "personal possessions").

As to how to break them up? use the GW designations of "Fallen Realms" and "Elven Havens"
