NOVA GT army musings

Tue Jun 14, 2016 9:59 pm

I am scheduled to attend the NOVA GT in September and so I am now looking at what forces for the 800 point tournament. Single faction (no allies) is the primary requirement.

Blue Mountain dwarves scout company
Balin, son of Fundin
12 Dwarf Rangers

Flói Stonehand
12 Dwarf Rangers

Dwarf Captain with Throwing axes;
12 Dwarf Rangers

Dwarf Captain
4 Dwarf Rangers
7 Dwarf Rangers with Dwarf longbow

Dwarf Captain
12 Dwarf Rangers with Dwarf longbow

Points = 800
Models = 64
Might = 10
Bows = 19

Spellcasters = none
Cavalry = none

The main advantages of this force is numbers and the volume of ranger accurate bowfire it can produce. Otherwise it is just a Fight 4, defense 5 infantry horde without spears. The heroes are good. It has limited mobility and no real monster killers other than heroes.

This force is nearly completely painted.

Blue Mountains artillery security force
Balin, son of Fundin
12 Dwarf Rangers with Throwing axes

Flói Stonehand
5 Dwarf Rangers
4 Dwarf Rangers with Dwarf longbow
1 Dwarf Ballista (with 2 dwarves)

Dwarf Captain with Throwing axes
5 Dwarf Rangers
4 Dwarf Rangers with Dwarf longbow
1 Dwarf Ballista (with 2 dwarves)

Dwarf Captain with Throwing axes
5 Dwarf Rangers
4 Dwarf Rangers with Dwarf longbow
1 Dwarf Ballista (with 2 dwarves)

Points = 800
Models = 52
Might = 8
Bows = 12 plus 3 Ballistae
Spellcasters = none
Cavalry = none

The main advantage is the war machines which are decent at taking down monsters if they can manage to hit. Otherwise it is just a Fight 4, defense 5 infantry horde without spears. The heroes are good. It has limited mobility and no real monster killers other than heroes. I need to playtest this version as I've rarely pulled the ballistae out of their box due to the low return for their points in kills.

This force is nearly completely painted.

========================
Garrison of Cirith Ungol unleashed

Shagrat, Captain of Cirith Ungol with Shield;
2 Orc Warrior with Spear;
10 Mordor Uruk-hai with Shield;

The Mouth of Sauron
2 Orc Warrior with Spear;
10 Mordor Uruk-hai with Shield;

Kardûsh the Firecaller
12 Orc Warrior with Spear;

Orc Captain with Warg;
2 Orc Warrior with Spear;
10 Orc Tracker with Warg;

Orc Captain with Warg;
2 Orc Warrior with Spear;
10 Orc Tracker with Warg;

Points = 800
Models = 65
Might = 9
Orc Bows = 20
Cavalry = 22
Spellcasters = 2

An upgraded force that I've used very successfully at 600 points using just orcs. It will still be a challenge to play well, but it has the basic tools to do just about everything. No monsters, but numbers more than make up for that when facing Good forces.

This force is nearly completely painted. I just need to finish the Uruk-hai warriors.

========================

Hammer of the Rhun
Easterling Captain with armoured horse, Easterling halberd and Shield
6 Black Dragon Kataphrakts

Easterling Captain with armoured horse, Easterling halberd and Shield
6 Black Dragon Kataphrakts

Easterling War Priest
1 Easterling Warrior with Shield
5 Easterling Warriors with Shield and Pike
6 Easterling Warriors with Bow

Easterling War Priest
5 Easterling Warriors with Shield and Pike
6 Easterling Warriors with Bow

Easterling War Priest
5 Easterling Warriors with Shield and Pike
6 Easterling Warriors with Bow

Points = 799
Models = 51
Might = 7
Bows = 18
Cavalry = 14
Spellcasters = 3

A force I don't take out very much anymore. Easterlings have many challenges, but the three Warpriests should make them a lot more resilient. The Kataphracts have never been stellar, but as Black Dragons at least they should win a few more fights against average troops. It has decent numbers, high defense troops, and Fury.

Nearly half of the force still needs to be painted.

======================

Faramir, Captain of Gondor with armoured horse, Heavy armour, Lancea and Shield
8 Citadel Guard with Horse and Longbow

Beregond with Horse
8 Citadel Guard with Horse and Longbow

Cirion, Lieutenant of Amon Barad
6 Warriors of Minas Tirith with Shield
6 Warriors of Minas Tirith with Shield and Spear

Captain of Minas Tirith with Shield;
6 Warriors of Minas Tirith with Shield
6 Warriors of Minas Tirith with Shield and Spear

Damrod, Ranger of Ithilien
2 Warriors of Minas Tirith with Shield
7 Warriors of Minas Tirith with Shield and Spear

Points = 800
Models = 54
Might = 10
Bows = 17
Cavalry = 18

One of my hardest hitting Gondorian forces. This force requires a lot of modelling to finish the mounted Citadel Guards and almost none of it is painted right now.

Hi!

They're all good lists, but do you know if they will run the standard scenarios at Nova? If so I find the ballistae and similar siege engines are just not earning their keep in the central deployment missions.
Of the others, I am most impressed by the 65 Orcs and the Minas Tirith force. If you're interested in tweaking the list, IMHO the Orcs would really benefit from a Warhorn (not just because of warrior courage, but because of all the warg dismounting that's likely to happen).

Good luck.!
I would rather share one lifetime with you than face all the ages of this world alone.

I went three and two for the GT. The terrain was very nice looking, but three of the tables I played on crippled cavalry and rewarded shield wall forces. The scenarios were fine overall. I took the orcs and they did pretty good considering the terrain problems. Burhdúr was a waste of points in the end. Other than game one and game five, he pretty much just gave my opponent points.

Game one his ability to hurl was the only thing that gave me a very close win . In game five I just kept him out of harm's way.

I like how this force played at 800 points. I just need a better general.

Well done.
I've not heard many people speak badly of Burhdúr! I am a fan of him myself. What was the problem, or was it simply that he was the army's Leader?

When Buhrdur is the only big thin in your force he is easy to counter with spellcraft and other heroes. I had Saruman and Rumil double team him in one game, while Thranduil's Terror and Galadriel's -1 Courage pretty much prevented me from attacking the rest of the army.

I hit Thorin in another game and lost the Heroic Strike combat (I rolled a 1). Thorin killed Buhrdur in one round of combat on the first turn of the game. Things when downhill from there fast.

At his point level he dies far too easily. I have generic dwarf captains without shields that can do more damage than he has ever done for me.
