NEW Lord of the Rings Hobbit Rumours and Model News

Penddraig had a long chat with Adam Troke and wrote a synopsis of their conversation. (Highlights are my own addition)

"There is a lot planned for the SBG starting with the release of the Hobbit-tome, “There and Back Again”. The proofs have been sent off for approval and it is hoped to release this around December. The book covers all the Hobbit films and includes scenarios for all the key events of the films – based on the extended editions. The book also contains a campaign system for linking the scenarios together as well as profiles for all the units / heroes found within the films.

A point that was raised was the power-level of the Hobbit profiles as compared to the Lord of the Rings profiles and Adam confirmed that the profiles have been balanced. One of the most exciting profiles for me is the inclusion of the Nazgûl as found in the Battle of Dol Gûldor! The book also includes rules for running armies of the main forces in the film such as the Iron Hill Dwarves or Gundabad. A new feature that is intended to be used in the revised armies is that by taking a force that is unique, the force will gain a bonus. The example given was that an army from Dale alone will gain a 3+ Shoot value. Dale bowman in a mixed force with Erebor or Lake Town wouldn`t take this bonus.

The previewed models such as Dáin, the Iron Hill Dwarves and the Gundabad Berserkers are all due for release from October to December alongside the Lake Town plastic house. Future plans are possible event-only models or special edition models. Event-only models will feature models that can be bought at GW events rather than through the webstore and represent a special role / pose of the character / unit whereas special edition models represent a limited time release.

Future plans involve a revised set of rules. Adam stated that he is not concerned about massive changes as the rules by themselves are mostly sound.
Revisions will include special strikes as these are currently unbalanced and possibly magic. This is planned for next summer and will come under the heading “Middle-Earth Strategy Battle Game” to demonstrate that the Hobbit and LOTR are using the same core rues.

At this point there are two planned ways forward which are not fixed in place. One option is to create a “One Book to Rule Them All” that will include the rules and the profiles of all the units, heroes, monsters of Middle-Earth so that everything is in one place. The second option is to release the rules as one book and then release separate source books that will cover the races with the profiles included inside.

Either way, all armies are to be revised in line with the idea stated above with army-specific bonuses.

No army is going to be scrapped and all will remain a playable force together with a re-balancing. Army creation may be tweaked but not dramatically. More army options are to be included so for example Rohan may have Théoden`s Hall, Helms Deep, the Western Mark under Éomere and the Eastern Mark under Théodred and the charge of Pellanor Field. Each will play slightly differently to the others

One confirmed area of development are scenario packs that will focus on one event or character. An example was given of the “Ringbearer`s Journey” that would include scenarios, rules etc that follow Frodo from leaving Bag End to the destruction of the Ring. Other possible plans are the War in the North and the Eastern Realms."

These were first pulled down from GW Facebook in May, but here are some photos for those people who missed them:

First from Rob on the GBHL Facebook group:
"New releases every single month. This will be multiple kits. Some old, some new.

Most new kits will be coming in 'autumn'. Anytime they don't have something new, they will supplement it with a reissue.

Most reissued models will come in whatever they were last cast in. So most will be metal or finecast.

New models will be in forge world resin, as will some old. Eventual aim is for all to be in forge world resin, except the plastics.

Speaking of which, new laketown scenery will be plastic. It's an exception to the rule as it was already so close to being ready for plastic tooling. They hope to release around the end of the year.

New book will be hardback (working title is "There and Back Again"), a supplement to go alongside your hardback hobbit rulebook. It will contain all the rules from DoS and BotFA, as well as new stuff. 30 scenarios will be featured.

Iron Hill Dwarves will be among the first new releases in a few months time. They are still waiting for approval. In the game, Dain is a hardnut who makes nearby dwarves better. He can headbutt models to the ground if he doesn't sound them. The ballista has an arrow stopping move, great denial rules and something totally fresh for the game. The iron hill dwarves are able to form a shield wall (4 dwarves or more in base contact) thus getting a +1 for Defense, so they will be Defense 8.

There were references in Keith's book for the Gundabad Orc Berserkers as well as Thranduil on Elk. There was also a render for a rather tasty looking mace that looked to me like the one Khâmul the Easterling carries in the Dol Guldur scenes.

Very exciting times. They did express they are working on their own time to bring this to us as soon as possible. We need to continue showing our passion and love for the game as we have already been doing!"

From Matthew Davies on the GBHL Facebook page

*** disclaimer ***
Take all the following information with a pinch of salt, this is only what We can remember or interpreted :) at fw open day
The pdf low resolution small print out looked amazing (this is definitely true)
So much stuff in it as an expansion.
New profiles, army lists, scenarios etc
Every*** (hobbit sbg) ***army list has been updated with either new profiles or tweaks
Existing profiles have been re-thought / tweaks sometimes major changes
Points drop some profiles. Allowing some larger heroes to be used in lower points matches
Thranduil just one profile now, no king of mirkwood profile
M'egolas is gone. No 3 attack and fight 7 (still can take orcrist)
If you see it in the movie there is a profile,
Minus big massive tunnel worm
Buffs from a single list - if your Army consists of models from just one army there are army buffs that will be added to your force.
There will definitely justice dale ... Just saying ....
Chariot- 2 pages of rules for charriot
Erebor champions upgrade models on top treated individually according to magic, and no brutal power attacks-
Treated like a mini Mumakil charge and wounds
Ram riders- possibility of auto knock down when charging into combat.
General troops, Banners, horns, shields, armour to troops.
Mirkwood elves Heavy armour and horsemen can take shields D6 cavalry
Lots of points changes, and slight tweaks that even we haven't noticed and will take comparison with previous profiles to see the difference -
We don't know the rules well enough and didn't have the time to notice from memory what they are :)
Gundabad trolls... Beefier than mordor trolls ... Oh yes.
Ogres fast and can charge through own units.
Giant bats are a thing- I don't remember any information on these.
Combat wraiths with 7 profiles. With multiple for 2 special rules and no will of evil. So no poof and gone like castellans ;)
Keeper of the dungeons - Golb has a profile very decent mid level hero.
The one you were all waiting for- mirkwood spiders are cheaper and better!! :)

I wish they would release gundabad orcs, in bigger plastic sets. If a lot of the new stuff has to do with the Battle of Five Armies, so it' s silly that that some very basic troops are not available in larger numbers.

Really looking forward the new book!

The rumour is the dwarves are being released in sets of 12 (all separate different poses) in forgeworld resin for 40 GBP. If thats the case then there will be a wider range of models for half the price of the previous wave of finecast models (2 for the price of 1!). I've also heard some of the finecast Hobbit releases may be redone or added to (so becomes boxes of 12 like the dwarves for the same/similar price).

The single thing I am most interested in finding out right now is the projected release date - mainly because I'd like to plan an event to celebrate it! :D
